Part of the fun of working for a great agency is being encouraged to think. Here are some of the things we’re thinking about.

Spooky Groupies

October 6, 2014 Gina Gallup

Fall is here, which means a crisp in the air and multi-colored leaves on (and falling from) trees. It means fun things like candy corn, boots, chili, football and scarves. It also means that Halloween is just around the corner. To get us in the mood for the season, I interviewed each Groupie and got some great info – and photos – from their Halloweens Past. Enjoy!

Groupie Meredith at HalloweenMeredith “Merry Death” Yates

Who or what you are:  Arthur Fonzarelli a.k.a. “Fonzie” a.k.a. “The Fonz”
Why:  Growing up my twin sister and I were Nick at Night junkies. We both loved Happy Days, but I absolutely adored Fonzie. He was the definition of “cool.”
Why you like that costume:  It was super comfortable, simple and WARM (I used to freeze trick-or-treating). I just wore a black jacket, blue jeans and my hair in a bun. I also got to play the character. I was snapping, throwing up the double thumbs and saying “eeeeeeyyyyyyy” and “sit on it” all night.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  Now that I’m definitely not of appropriate trick-or-treating age, I enjoy cooking something warm in the crock-pot, wearing my homemade “BOO!” sweatshirt and passing out candy to trick-or-treaters.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Caramel Apple Pops and Snickers
Favorite scary movie:  Final Destination or The Sixth Sense
Favorite fall food:  Honeycrisp apples
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  I’m just wearing my “BOO!” sweatshirt

Audrey “Orange you scared of me?” Vermilyea

Groupie Audrey at Halloween

Who or what you are:   I am an orange. More importantly, Paul is a bunny.
Why:  I wanted to be a carrot to match the bunny, but all I could find was an orange.
Why you like that costume:  I like it because it didn’t really make sense. And I’m telling you, it was a strange costume. The face of the orange was really intense and angry. I scared people that night.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  Have a bonfire. I also think dance parties are extra fun when everyone is dressed up.
Favorite Halloween candy:   anything chocolate
Favorite scary movie:  Silence of the Lambs
Favorite fall food:  Soup and smores
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  Undecided

Groupie Sam at HalloweenSam “Sasper the Ghost (because I’m so white)” Prichard

Who or what you are:  Mary Poppins
Why:  Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is my favorite word.
Why you like that costume:  It gave me an excuse to eat a spoonful of sugar and fly around with a parrot head umbrella.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  I love going to the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins and baking the seeds, all whilst watching Hocus Pocus.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Reese’s
Favorite scary movie:  It’s not scary, but my favorite Halloween movie is Hocus Pocus.
Favorite fall food:  Thanksgiving Stuffing
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  1920s circus ringleader (think Water for Elephants)

Groupie Avery at HalloweenAvery “Grave Digger” Driggers

Who or what you are:  Rhubarbra Bush
Why:  My coworkers and I dressed up like food puns (others included: Quiche-a, John Ham Hock and Liza Minnelli Wafers)
Why you like that costume:  I don’t like that costume. I LOVE it. There are few things better than a thoughtful and unexpected food pun.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  I enjoying coming up with elaborate costume ideas for large groups that rarely come to fruition. (And also watching Hocus Pocus.)
Favorite Halloween candy:  While not technically candy, you can’t beat caramel apples.
Favorite scary movie:  Does Hocus Pocus count?
Favorite fall food:  VERY hard to choose. Toss up between green bean casserole (topped with butter and cheezits) and split pea soup with ham hock. And fried apple hand pies!
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  I have a few ideas that involve large groups. We’ll see if they end up happening.

Groupie Brooke at HalloweenBrooke “BOOOO” Berger

Who or what you are:  I dressed up as (a very disheveled) Belle from Disney’s Beauty &The Beast. I’m four years old in this picture.
Why:  I used to watch Beauty & The Beast every day after school. I still know all the words to every song!
Why you like that costume:  Belle was always my favorite Disney character. I loved this costume so much it was worn quite a few times after Halloween.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  I like to make some fall cider and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. I love seeing how creative people get with their costumes.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Favorite candy is Reese’s pumpkins. I prefer them to the original — better peanut butter to chocolate ratio.
Favorite “scary” movie:  Hocus Pocus.
Favorite fall food:  Apple pie. And Reese’s pumpkins.
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  Maybe I’ll take the Belle costume out of storage this year… another excuse to be a princess for a day :)

Groupie Caitlin at HalloweenCaitlin “Halloween Hater” Varley

Who or what you are:  A jack-o-lantern
Why:  I hate Halloween, especially dressing up. Usually I avoid doing anything that would require a costume, but every now and then it’s unavoidable. If I have to dress up, I wear this jackolantern T-shirt I made with a friend in five minutes. The green ribbon (it’s the stem of the pumpkin) really makes it, I think.
Why you like that costume:  It’s a T-shirt so it’s comfortable, and it’s arguably not even a real costume.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  If at all possible, you’ll find me at home watching Netflix, preferably with some Halloween candy. Sometimes I go back to my parents’ house in Cincinnati to pass out candy.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Reese’s peanut butter cups. The pumpkins are the second best special shape (the Easter eggs are the best).
Favorite scary movie:  Not a fan of scary movies (See? Halloween really is not my holiday).
Favorite fall food:  Chili
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  I don’t know what I’m doing, but if I do have to go out I will be wearing my jack-o-lantern T-shirt for the third time. Hopefully I still have the green ribbon somewhere…

Jeff at HalloweenJeff “Elvis” Bradford

Who or what you are:  Redneck
Why:  It was easy to do
Why you like that costume:  It’s the only one I can remember, it was funny.
What do you like to do on Halloween:  Hand out candy to kids
Favorite Halloween candy:  Nestle Crunch
Favorite scary movie:  Paranormal Activity
Favorite fall food:  Chili
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  Not dressing up

Groupie Alex at HalloweenAlex “Axe-Wielder” Newby

Who or what you are: Peter Pan
Why: I don’t think I necessarily wanted to be Peter Pan. My twin sister wanted to be Tinkerbell and Peter Pan was just her obvious sidekick.
Why you like that costume: It was just a cute little costume and it had a really cute hat with a feather.
What do you like to do on Halloween: I love to post up on the porch and hand out candy! I am NOT a fan of scary movies or haunted houses, so hanging with the kids and seeing all of the costumes is more my style.
Favorite Halloween candy: Twix
Favorite scary movie: I hate them all!
Favorite fall food: Pumpkin bread
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be? I don’t know! I’m definitely dressing up but I haven’t thought of a creative costume yet!

Groupie Molly at HalloweenMolly “Brunhilda Apple Bobber” Garvey

Who or what you are:  A pinata
Why:  I went to visit a friend at UNC. She and her friends were dressing up as the holidays. She was Cinco de Mayo, hence the piñata.
Why you like that costume:  It was easy to make!
What do you like to do on Halloween:  Hang out at home with my roommates and pass out candy.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Reese’s or Butterfingers
Favorite scary movie:  I can’t think of many scary movies I’ve seen! I watched Clue when I was little and had nightmares… I haven’t been a big scary movie person since.
Favorite fall food:  Chili
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  I think I’m dressing up with my roommates as the three blind mice (so that we can wear sweatpants…)

And in case you were wondering about me?

Groupie Gina at HalloweenGina “Pumpkinhead” Gallup

Who or what you are:  A hippie
Why:  It was easy and allowed me to not have to spend too much time on it.
Why you like that costume:  I already owned or had made most of the stuff; I could just let my hippie flag fly. Plus it was comfortable!
What do you like to do on Halloween:  Hide in the back room from the trick-or-treaters and watch a movie with my hubby.
Favorite Halloween candy:  Reese’s pumpkins, natch.
Favorite scary movie:  I remember watching Nightmare on Elm Street and being terrified, and I really haven’t watched scary movies since.
Favorite fall food:  Chili
If you’re dressing up this year, what will you be?  Not dressing up. I’ll just hide in the back room once more…

And how about you? Let us know what you’re doing for Halloween below. And feel free to weigh in on which Groupie has the best costume!
